Why am I asked for an identity document when I pay by card?

In certain situations, merchants may request an identity document to:

➤⠀identify the owner;

➤⠀verify the consistency of the printed name on carta with the one from the identity card;

➤⠀check the correspondence of the signature on the card with the one on the receipt.

This check is nothing but a protective measure for the holder the card, against possible fraudulent uses of it. 🕵
